Five years of use should be visible. Pack fabric will polish where it rubs, shell cuffs will soften, midsoles will compress, and repaired areas may no longer match the material around them. The goal of care is not to preserve a new appearance. It is to keep wear understandable, functions intact, and small damage from becoming structural failure. Age alone says little; five years of weekly use and five years in storage create different problems and deserve different inspections.
Learn the difference between wear and failure
Wear is gradual change that leaves the item able to do its job. Color loss at a shoulder strap, a crease in a shoe upper, or light abrasion on a shell face can be ordinary evidence of contact. Failure is a loss of function or a condition likely to progress quickly: a seam opening under load, membrane delamination, cracked hardware, exposed foam, a sole separating at the toe, or fabric thinning until light passes through.
Location matters as much as appearance. A small hole in an external pack pocket may be easy to stabilize. The same hole beside a shoulder-strap anchor carries repeated force and needs a stronger assessment. Frayed stitching at the end of a non-load-bearing hem differs from broken stitches traveling along a structural seam. Mark the ends of a suspected crack or seam opening with removable tape, then check whether it grows during a short controlled use.
Odor, stiffness, and discoloration can signal contamination rather than simple age. Salt and body oils collect around collars, cuffs, harness contact, and footwear linings. Fuel, insect repellent, sunscreen, and solvents may affect coatings or adhesives. Cleaning according to the material's care method is often the first diagnostic step because it reveals the actual surface and prevents grime from being worked deeper during repair.
Inspect by system once each season
Set equipment on a clean, well-lit surface and work in the same order. For apparel, begin with closures, then seams and tape, high-contact fabric, adjusters, and weather openings. Flex taped seams gently rather than pulling them apart. Look for cloudy areas, bubbles, or edges that lift. Run zips through their full travel and inspect the pin, box, slider, coil or teeth, and surrounding stitching.
For packs, remove everything from pockets and release compression straps. Check the harness under tension, especially bar tacks and places where webbing disappears into a seam. Inspect the bottom and frame contact points from inside and outside. Buckles should latch positively without white stress marks or cracks. Cord should retain elasticity where required, and cord locks should hold under a firm pull.
For footwear, compare left and right. Uneven outsole wear may reflect terrain or gait, but a sudden difference can follow damage or midsole collapse. Flex the forefoot and inspect the bond line for gaps. Check laces, eyelets, heel lining, toe protection, and the interior under the footbed. A tread pattern can remain visible after rubber has hardened or key edges have rounded; evaluate grip in known conditions rather than judging depth alone.

Record washes, water-repellent renewal, adhesive repairs, and replaced components.
Store equipment dry, uncompressed where appropriate, and away from heat or direct sun.
Reinspect after an unusual event such as a hard fall, chemical spill, flooded pack, or overheated storage.
Repair early and keep the intervention proportionate
A field repair has two immediate purposes: restore enough function to continue safely and stop damage from growing. A clean adhesive patch can stabilize a small shell tear. Tape can secure a loose strap end or protect a cracked buckle from snagging. Cord can replace a broken pull. None of these automatically restores original strength, waterproofing, or load rating. The repair should be inspected at every stop where failure would matter.
At home, remove improvised material only if doing so will not enlarge the damage. Clean and dry the area, then choose a repair compatible with the fabric, coating, flex, and expected load. Rounded patch corners resist peeling. Structural stitching needs correct thread, seam design, and reinforcement; adding dense stitches through coated fabric can perforate it without distributing load. When a repair involves a harness anchor, climbing-related component, or a failure whose consequence cannot be managed, use qualified service or retire the item from that role.
Visible repair is not inferior repair. A contrasting patch makes inspection easier and records where the material has been changed. What matters is full adhesion, smooth load transfer, sealed edges where weather protection is required, and no new hard point that abrades adjacent fabric. After curing, test progressively: first by hand, then under a reduced controlled load, and finally in a low-consequence outing before returning to remote use.
A useful repair history makes an old item easier to trust because its changes are known, not hidden.
Retirement can be specific rather than absolute. Footwear that no longer grips securely on wet rock may still serve on dry paths. A shell with persistent delamination may become a wind layer but should not be counted as rain protection. A pack with a compromised harness may hold equipment at home. Relabel the role clearly so appearance does not lead someone else to assume the original performance.
Field note
At five years, dependable equipment should show a legible history: abrasion where contact occurs, maintenance at sensible intervals, repairs completed before damage spread, and retirement decisions tied to function. After each trip, dry the item, empty every pocket, and look at the places that carried the greatest load. Once a season, compare those areas with earlier photographs and notes. The aim is not indefinite life at any cost. It is to use equipment fully, recognize when its margin has changed, and make the next decision with evidence rather than surprise.
